If you need to replace your water heater this year – in 2015…

As your plumber, it’s my solemn duty to help you choose the best products for your home and family, as well as to try and save you money along the way. And in case you haven’t heard, when it comes to energy efficient water heaters, the new Federal requirements are coming online this April 16th. This means that – if you have to replace your water heater this year – 2015 – please know how important it is to replace it with a water heater that meets these new federal energy conservation standards.

Do you know what the new energy efficient requirements for a water heater are now?

Now – if you need to know what these new energy efficient standards and requirements are, and which water heater you should buy – then – well, you can go online. However – if you go online you’ll discover that – like everything else about our government – they’ve made this about as confusing and difficult to understand as possible. So, after talking it over with my staff, we’d like you to know that you can give us a call because we will have operators standing by to help you with this. (:0) Yes, our team here at Moon Valley Plumbing will happily talk to you all day about your water heater, water heaters in general, and specifically – about which water heater will suit your needs as well your wallet.

Do you know how to choose a water heater that will qualify you for a tax credit in 2016?

Also – in addition to figuring out which water heater you have to buy to meet the regulations, it’s important to look at the long-term tax benefits that a new water heater could bring. Again, that’s something we understand and can advise you on as well, because you can save a lot of money on your taxes in 2016 if you do it right. And just so you know, it doesn’t matter to us which brand of water heater you buy – as long as it serves your needs and saves you money – both now and in the long run. Now, we just want you to know that we don’t sell water heaters, and we don’t represent any brand, we just do this as a service for our customers, because the government drives us crazy too.

But what about buying a water heater – and getting a tax credit for 2014?

In the meantime, though – what about water heaters and tax credits for 2014 – the tax year you probably already have spread out all over the dining room table right now? Well – if you bought a water heater and had it installed at any point in 2014 – it’s possible that you could save some money on your taxes when you file next month, even if you had no idea what you were doing when you bought it (just trust us on this).

Here’s the deal: the fact is that you could qualify for up to $500 in an energy tax credit if you replaced or upgraded any one of these following energy systems last year, and it met the Energy Star certified qualifications:

  • any kind of heating, ventilation, or air conditioning units
  • various kind of insulation
  • windows doors, skylights
  • metal or asphalt roofs
  • biomass stoves
  • and the biggee and our personal favorite for this column – a NON-SOLAR WATER HEATER

That means that you can save a nice chunk of change on your taxes if you installed an energy star certified, energy-efficient water heater at any in 2014 – right up until midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Wait – what’s so great about “energy tax credits?”

Everyone knows that a tax deduction is dandy and a great thing to have, because it reduces your taxable income; you get to deduct it as an expense. However, a lot of people don’t realize that a tax credit is better – really – it’s a whole lot better than a tax deduction, because a tax credit means you get the dollar-to-dollar reduction. This means that if you did it right and bought the right kind of water heater last year, and you qualify for the whole $500 tax credit – you actually pay $500 less in taxes this year. That’s right. A tax credit lowers your taxes by that amount, whereas a tax deduction just lowers your overall income, which may or may not result in a break on your taxes.
